How to Take Care of Your New Tattoo: A Simple Step-by-Step Guide

Getting a new tattoo is exciting—it’s a way to express yourself and carry your art with you forever. But now that you’ve got your fresh ink, the most important part begins: aftercare.

Taking good care of your tattoo helps it heal properly and keeps it looking great for years to come. We know it can feel like a lot, especially if it’s your first tattoo, so here’s an easy, friendly guide to help you through it.

Note: This post is based on years of experience, but it’s not medical advice. If you have any health concerns, please speak with a doctor.

1. Keep the Bandage On for 2 Hours

Your artist covered your tattoo with a bandage to protect it. Leave it on for two hours after your appointment.
If you notice swelling, you can use ice therapy during the second hour:

  • Keep the bandage dry.

  • Place a clean towel over it.

  • Put an ice pack on top for no more than 15 minutes.

  • You can repeat this after a 30-minute break if needed.

2. Gently Wash Your Tattoo

After two hours, carefully remove the bandage. Wash the area with very warm water and gentle soap (like Cetaphil). Use clean, soapy hands—not a washcloth or sponge—and then rinse with cool water.

This might feel a little uncomfortable, but it should not be painful.

3. Moisturize 2–3 Times a Day

Use a thin layer of water-based lotion 2 to 3 times daily. We recommend Cetaphil lotion in a tube—it’s clean, easy to apply, and gentle on fresh tattoos.

✨ Always use clean hands and rub the lotion in gently. Don’t use too much!

Once your tattoo starts flaking, let it do its thing—don’t pick or rub. Flaking is part of the healing process.

4. Keep It Safe While It Heals

For the first 2 weeks, avoid the following:

  • Direct sunlight

  • Swimming pools and hot tubs

  • Soaking in baths or long showers

  • Touching or scratching the area

  • Letting pets or dirty surfaces near your tattoo

If you’re in a public or shared space, assume surfaces aren’t clean.

5. It’s Healed… But Not Done Yet!

Most tattoos look healed after 14 days, but your skin will still be thin and sensitive. Keep taking care of it for at least a month—especially if it’s in a spot that rubs against clothes or gets sun exposure.

6. Protect Your Tattoo from the Sun

Once your tattoo has healed, keep the colors bright by protecting it from UV rays. Use a 30+ SPF sunscreen every 2 hours when you’re outside.

We recommend:

  • CoreTex Sun X 50 SPF Broad Spectrum Sunscreen

Both are long-lasting, water-resistant, and super easy to apply.

7. Want Something Made Just for Tattoos?

If you prefer aftercare that’s made especially for tattoos, After Inked Lotion is a solid choice. It’s gentle, soothing, and great for healing skin.
